Hi, My name is

Songyao Zhang

About me

I am a freelance web designer with 4 years of Business Admin experience as background, currently working as a TA at Seneca College.

I design and build beautiful websites

After four years of working as a bookkeeper, I decided to make a career change during the pandemic. I took Web Design and Development courses at Seneca College. During the program, I learned a lot about the newest web design technique. My instructors’ compliments and the achievement of 4.0 GPA in the courses provided me with more confidence to continue doing what I enjoy – color, pictures, and design!

What I do

UI/UX Design

An effective interface is based on understanding users' needs and spreading a clear message. I make sure the design is innovative and neat with all of this.

Front End Development

If you are looking for a developer who’ll take over the research and development of your website, I am a well-established professional to help you with this.

Logo/Graphic Design

If you are looking for a unique and attractive logo or simply editing an image to put on your website, I will be more than happy to assist you.

Keep Learning...

I believe continuous learning is crucial for a web designer because there are always new technologies and software. I’ve spent a lot of time taking online courses. Until now, I’ve completed over 20 courses on educational platforms such as Coursera and LinkedIn Learning. And these are the skills I obtained:

Website Design Freelance Projects

This is a client project I am currently working on. After the first investigation of the old site, I found:

  • The site is built with an old version of Joomla – Need to update to a new platform, such as WordPress
  • There are too many links on the home page – Need better organization. Create a sitemap would help.
  • Client requires functions such as event registration and collection of payments – Require certain plugins or code.

Considering the business industry and users’ needs, I figured out:

  • Design needs to be clean and well organized. Important buttons and links need to stand out.
  • No need for fancy fonts. Bold headings can help users find what they need quickly.
  • It will be important to test and make sure the flow is smooth

This was a client project I did within my study program. In 8 weeks, I built this multi-page website for my client using WordPress. The website is responsive, fully functional, and met all my client’s needs.

I created a prototype using Figma to give the client a better understanding of how everything works. I tried to make my design clean and well-organized. All the elements were not only consistent on all the pages but also had background color or background images to divide sections. In this case, accent content could be more attractive to users.

Course Assignments/ Mock Projects

This was a Flex box practice project for my course assignment. I researched 3 different bakery websites and designed this website for my fabricated client Bob. It includes Home, Menu, and Contact page. On the menu page, Flex box helped a lot when I was trying to organize all those products’ images. For details, please check the design rationale page. All the contents included are for academic purposes only.

I used Bootstrap for this practice project. It was a good tool for setting up grids and achieving responsive design. There were several JavaScript functions used for changing image when hovering, changing text message after certain time, checking contact form validation, getting current date, and showing full-size image when hovering thumbnail image. This website has a very simple but clean look, which I like the most.

This was a practice of jQuery plugins and load function. Based on the code provided by my instructor, I added the slide show on the top of the page, a lightbox when user clicks on the pictures, and a smooth scroll effect when user navigates the page.

Graphic Design

This is a project I did for my Coursera course. I used the online tool Canva to make this 4-page brochure. Theme colors orange and black are always a good combination. The bright part makes food warm and delicious, while the dark part makes it elegant and high-grade.

This is also a practice project I created using Canva. Light pink and dark purple generate a good contrast. Pink is also Sakura (Cherry Blossom) ‘s color, so it will create a strong first impression also is easy for customers to remember.
